Lucknow records highest violent crimes in UP

Lucknow recorded higher cases of murder, rape, kidnapping, acid attacks, and deaths due to negligence than Ghaziabad and Kanpur, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2023. The city logged 98 murders with 101 victims, 151 rapes with 152 victims, and 720 kidnapping cases with 722 victims. Ghaziabad and Kanpur reported lower figures across these categories.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the state is “mafia-free” and that criminals have been neutralized. He emphasized that the UP Police swiftly addresses any threats, contributing to a safer environment for citizens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the improved law and order situation in the state, noting that the decline in crime rates has encouraged more investments in Uttar Pradesh. He commended the UP Police for creating a system that deters criminals and makes citizens feel secure.

To counter rising crime, Lucknow Police have implemented an AI-powered surveillance system covering 250 key locations. The system aims to enhance public safety, especially for women and vulnerable groups, by detecting distress signals and alerting police in real time. Authorities have noted that the increase in some crimes may also reflect higher reporting and registration of cases.

Past NCRB reports had also shown Lucknow among the top cities in Uttar Pradesh for violent crimes, making proactive policing and technology-driven monitoring a priority for the administration. Both the Chief Minister and local authorities have reiterated their commitment to transforming Lucknow into a safer, crime-free city through stricter law enforcement, community engagement, and advanced surveillance tools.

While NCRB data indicates that certain crime categories remain high, the state government maintains that ongoing measures and vigilant policing will significantly reduce criminal incidents and make the city safer for all residents.
