Lokah Chapter 1 emerges as success, Paves way for sequel

With the announcement of Lokah Chapter 2 starring Tovino Thomas, attention has turned to the resounding success of the franchise’s first installment, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra.

Produced by Dulquer Salmaan under Wayfarer Films and directed by Dominic Arun, the female-led superhero fantasy starring Kalyani Priyadarshan made history at the box office. Within a week of its release on August 28, the film crossed the ₹100-crore global mark. It later surpassed Manjummel Boys to become India’s highest-grossing Malayalam film, netting ₹142.90 crore in India alone.

Industry trackers estimate the worldwide gross collections at over ₹260–280 crore, placing the film among the most profitable ventures of 2025. It also became South India’s highest-grossing female-led film and the third-highest in Indian cinema, overtaking Gangubai Kathiawadi.

Beyond numbers, Lokah Chapter 1 carved a cultural milestone as Malayalam cinema’s first female superhero film, blending mythology with modern fantasy. Its success has not only elevated Kalyani Priyadarshan’s stature but also positioned the Lokah franchise as a new cinematic universe with pan-India appeal.

With its record-breaking run and growing fan base, Lokah Chapter 1 has firmly established the brand name “Lokah” as one of Malayalam cinema’s most bankable properties, setting high expectations for the sequel.
