Sarojini Naidu, popularly known as the “Nightingale of India” (Bharat Kokila) , was a distinguished poet, eloquent orator and a prominent leader of India’s freedom struggle. Born on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad, she played a significant role in the national movement and emerged as a strong voice for women’s education and empowerment.

A committed social reformer, Naidu was associated with several nationalist movements and worked closely with leading leaders of the freedom struggle. She also contributed significantly to women’s education and was instrumental in the establishment of the Lady Irwin College for Women in Delhi.

After Independence, Sarojini Naidu became the first woman Governor of India, serving as the Governor of the then United Provinces, now Uttar Pradesh. She passed away on March 2, 1949.

The portrait of Sarojini Naidu in the Central Hall was unveiled on December 16, 1959, by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Paying tribute, Om Birla said Sarojini Naidu’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle and nation-building remains unparalleled and continues to inspire generations.
