Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi , MP from Assam , who recently quit the Congress and joined the BJP . Bordoloi, a seasoned politician, was elected twice consecutively to the Lok Sabha from Nagaon on a Congress ticket and resigned from the party on March 17, 2026 .

A day after joining the BJP, he was given the party ticket to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections from the Dispur constituency. The Speaker confirmed that Bordoloi’s resignation as MP will take effect from March 20 .

Bordoloi has a long and distinguished political career in Assam. He served as a minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government for 15 years , handling portfolios such as Industries, Power, and Planning . He was also a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly before entering national politics and subsequently represented Nagaon in the Lok Sabha for two terms.

His decision to move from Parliament to state politics comes ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections , scheduled for 9 April , with results to be declared on 4 May . Political analysts say the BJP’s move to field Bordoloi in Dispur reflects the party’s strategy to strengthen its position in the state and gain electoral advantage by bringing in an experienced leader from the opposition.

Although Bordoloi’s entry into the BJP and assembly contest is significant, there is no indication that he is being positioned for the Chief Minister post , which remains with incumbent Himanta Biswa Sarma . Bordoloi’s switch highlights the shifting political equations in Assam, where veteran leaders are being courted to consolidate support ahead of crucial state elections.
