Live mortar shell found, defused safely in Baramulla

A live mortar shell was recovered on Friday during digging work near an Army unit in the Rampur area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, triggering a swift security response, officials said.

According to official communication, the explosive device was detected by workers while excavation was underway close to the Army installation. Following the recovery, security forces immediately cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any civilian movement. The local police were informed, and coordination was established to handle the situation safely.

An Army bomb disposal squad was subsequently deployed to the spot. Officials said the team examined the shell and carried out a controlled defusal operation in the presence of police personnel, adhering to standard safety protocols.

“There was no loss of life or damage to property during the operation,” officials said, adding that the situation was brought fully under control after the shell was safely disposed of. Authorities are maintaining vigilance in the area, though no further threat has been reported.
