Lionel Messi’s remarkable 21-year journey with Argentina has come to an emotional close, leaving behind a record book that reflects both extraordinary longevity and unprecedented success.

Messi made his Argentina debut in August 2005 against Hungary and, remarkably, was sent off less than a minute after coming on after elbowing an opponent. Two decades later, he walked off the international stage after Argentina’s 3-0 win over Benin, bringing the curtain down on one of football’s greatest international careers.

The numbers tell the story.

Messi played in a record-equalling six World Cups, in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026, matching long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. He scored 21 goals across those tournaments, one behind France’s Kylian Mbappe, who reached 22 in only three World Cup appearances.

His greatest triumph came in Qatar in 2022, when Argentina defeated France in a dramatic final to give Messi the World Cup that had eluded him for so long. He had previously reached the final in 2014 and later in 2026.

Messi finished his international career with 126 goals, more than twice the previous Argentina record of Gabriel Batistuta, who scored 54 goals in 78 appearances. Only Ronaldo, with 146 goals for Portugal, has scored more in men’s international football.

Messi also made 208 appearances for Argentina, another national record. Only Ronaldo has played more internationally, with 234 appearances for Portugal.

At 39, Messi leaves international football with records, trophies and moments that have defined an era. From a debut that lasted barely a minute to a career spanning six World Cups, his Argentina story ends as one of football’s most extraordinary chapters.
