Lingayat identity debate resurfaces ahead of socio-economic surveys

The demand for separate religious status for the Lingayat community has resurfaced in Karnataka, reigniting debates over identity, caste, and political implications. This movement, which gained momentum during the 2017–18 period, has seen renewed vigor with the recent 'Basava Culture Campaign-2025' organized by the Lingayat Matadeeshara Okkoota.

Community leaders assert that Lingayatism, founded by 12th-century reformer Basaveshwara, is a distinct monotheistic faith that rejects caste hierarchies and idol worship. They seek recognition as a separate religion to access government benefits and reservations, similar to Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs. The movement emphasizes unity within the community, advocating for the inclusion of marginalized sub-castes and promoting inter-caste marriages.

The demand has deepened the rift between Lingayats and Veerashaivas. While Lingayat leaders push for separate religious status, Veerashaiva leaders, including former Chief Ministers Basavaraj Bommai and Jagadish Shettar, argue for maintaining the community's Hindu identity. They caution against division and emphasize constitutional unity. The BJP has criticized the movement, alleging that the caste census and separate religion push are politically motivated and could divide Hindu society.

In the context of Karnataka's ongoing socio-economic survey, the apex body of the Lingayat community has advised members to identify as "Veerashaiva-Lingayat" to assert their distinct religious identity. This move is part of broader efforts to differentiate the community culturally and politically within India's diverse religious framework.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed support for recognizing Lingayatism as a separate religion, contingent upon community consensus. However, the Union Government has previously declined such recognition, citing constitutional and legal concerns. The debate continues to evolve, with community leaders and political figures on both sides advocating for their perspectives.
