Vinai Kumar Saxena , the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, on Saturday made his maiden visit to Kargil, where he urged local leaders to work collectively towards transforming the region into a premier global tourist destination.

During his visit, Saxena held a meeting with key stakeholders, including Chief Executive Councillor Mohd Jaffer Akhoon and Member of Parliament Mohd Haneefa Jan , along with representatives of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil. He assured them of full administrative support and cooperation in addressing local concerns.

In his discussions, the Lt Governor reviewed a range of issues raised by council members, including tourism promotion, administrative reforms, ease of doing business, economic development, and job creation . Emphasising unity, he called on the council to work in unison to position Kargil and Ladakh among the most sought-after destinations for tourists.

Earlier in the day, Saxena inaugurated the Apricot Blossom-Chuli Mendok Festival at Darchiks in the scenic Aryan Valley. Praising the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness, he described Ladakh as the “crown of the nation” and encouraged visitors to share their experiences widely. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring tourist safety, comfort, and satisfaction.

The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), established to provide local self-governance in the remote region, plays a crucial role in planning and implementing development initiatives in districts like Kargil and Leh.

Ladakh continues to face several challenges, including harsh climatic conditions, limited infrastructure, connectivity constraints, unemployment, and the need to balance development with environmental conservation . Addressing these concerns, Saxena reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive tourism , ensuring that local communities benefit economically while preserving the region’s fragile ecosystem and unique cultural identity.
