LG, Mercedes-Benz strengthen long-term EV tech alliance
South Korea’s LG Group and Mercedes-Benz Group strengthened their long-term partnership in next-generation automotive electronics, marking a new phase in the Korea-Germany strategic alliance for future mobility technologies.
According to a report by Pulse , Mercedes-Benz Group Chairman Ola Källenius visited LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul, on Thursday, where he met with top executives from LG’s major automotive component subsidiaries. Attendees included LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan, LG Energy Solution CEO Kim Dong-myung, LG Display CEO Jeong Cheol-dong, and LG Innotek CEO Moon Hyuk-soo.
Industry analysts said the meeting went beyond a courtesy call, serving as a significant step toward deepening cooperation in batteries, displays, and sensors key components of Mercedes-Benz’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) portfolio. The two groups had last met about 20 months earlier during Mercedes-Benz’s Tech Day event in Germany in March 2024, marking the beginning of high-level engagement between their leadership teams.
The Seoul meeting was viewed as the second round of strategic discussions aimed at broadening collaboration in battery technology, electronic components, and mobility innovation.
LG Energy Solution and Mercedes-Benz discussed expanding production capacity and strengthening their cooperation under a ₩15 trillion (USD 10.23 billion) long-term cylindrical battery supply agreement signed earlier this year. Such contracts in the EV industry typically span several years to a decade, aligning with vehicle development and production cycles.
LG Display, which already supplies OLED panels for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, showcased its new flexible P-OLED technology, while LG Innotek explored further collaboration in camera modules, radar, and lidar sensors for next-generation models.
During his Seoul visit, Källenius also met Cho Hyun-sang, Vice Chairman of HS Hyosung Corp., the official Mercedes-Benz dealership partner in Korea, and Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee to discuss potential cooperation in vehicle electronics.
Industry observers said the meetings underscored Mercedes-Benz’s long-term strategy to build a robust and sustainable Asian supply chain to support its electrification goals. Given both companies’ shared focus on next-generation vehicle technologies, analysts expect the LG–Mercedes partnership to extend well into the late 2020s and 2030s, positioning LG Group as a cornerstone partner in Mercedes-Benz’s global EV journey.
The strengthened alliance is also expected to enhance both companies’ competitiveness in the fast-evolving automotive market by securing stable component supplies, accelerating EV innovation, and delivering advanced in-car technologies helping them stay ahead of global rivals in the race toward smart and sustainable mobility.
