Legislative council chairman accepts Kavitha’s resignation

The Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council, Gutha Sukhender Reddy, has accepted the resignation of MLC K. Kavitha, who was earlier suspended from the BRS party. According to an official statement issued by the Legislative Council Secretariat late Tuesday night, her resignation will take effect retrospectively from January 6.

Kavitha was elected as an MLC in 2021 from the Nizamabad local bodies constituency. She had first submitted her resignation on September 3 last year, but it was not accepted at that time. Speaking in the Legislative Council on January 5, Kavitha once again urged the Chairman to immediately approve her resignation.

During that address, she launched strong criticism against the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by her father and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. Kavitha alleged that corruption had taken place during the BRS government’s tenure in Telangana and described the party’s constitution as a “joke.” She also made it clear that she was not responsible for certain undemocratic and unpopular decisions taken during the previous BRS rule.

Referring to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, Kavitha accused some of her relatives and senior party leaders, including T. Harish Rao and J. Santosh Kumar, of tarnishing her father’s reputation. Following these developments, she was suspended from the BRS in September 2025.

After her suspension, Kavitha shifted her focus to public issues through Telangana Jagruthi, the cultural organisation she heads. In December last year, she announced that she would contest the upcoming Assembly elections through her own political platform.
