Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday urged the public not to compare actor-turned-politician Vijay with M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), asserting that the late AIADMK founder’s legacy was unparalleled.

Addressing a poll rally, the AIADMK general secretary described MGR as a “god” figure for party workers and highlighted his lifelong commitment to public welfare. He noted that MGR spent his film earnings on people’s welfare and donated his properties to a home for the deaf and mute after his death. “Such a great leader cannot be compared with anyone,” Palaniswami said, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

His remarks come amid growing comparisons in political and public discourse between Vijay who recently launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and MGR, both of whom transitioned from cinema to politics. Supporters and sections of social media have drawn parallels between the two, citing their mass appeal and potential to influence Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

Without directly naming critics, Palaniswami questioned whether Vijay could match MGR’s record of public service. While acknowledging that anyone has the right to enter politics in a democracy, he emphasized that leaders must meet people’s expectations and address their problems responsibly.

The AIADMK leader also took a swipe at Udhayanidhi Stalin , calling for “dignity and discipline” in political criticism. He underscored that AIADMK leaders are shaped by the “political school” of MGR and J. Jayalalithaa , prioritising public welfare.

Palaniswami further defended his tenure as Chief Minister, citing his handling of crises such as droughts, cyclones, floods, and the pandemic, and claimed his government ensured effective governance without burdening citizens.
