Indian tennis legend and Olympic medalist Leander Paes has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a new phase in his public life and sparking speculation about his political future. He was inducted into the party in the presence of Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Sukanta Majumdar .

Paes’ entry comes ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 , making it politically significant. Having previously been associated with the All India Trinamool Congress , his move signals a shift that could align with the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its presence in West Bengal .

While speculation is rife, there is no official confirmation on whether Paes will be given an election ticket. Party leaders have indicated that his role is yet to be decided, suggesting that he may initially serve as a campaigner and public face rather than a candidate. His popularity, clean image, and appeal among youth and urban voters make him a valuable addition to the party’s outreach strategy.

Speaking after joining, Paes emphasized the importance of leadership in sports development. He praised initiatives like Khelo India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme , and highlighted the need to invest in sports education and infrastructure. He also stressed creating opportunities for young athletes and empowering women through equal access and scholarships.

Despite the buzz, an immediate electoral role appears unlikely, as parties typically assess new entrants before offering tickets. However, Paes’ long-term political prospects remain strong if he successfully builds a grassroots connect.
