Leaders remember Pranab Mukherjee’s Statesmanship on his jayanti

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday paid floral tributes to former president Pranab Mukherjee on his birth anniversary at Rashtrapati Bhavan, honouring his towering contributions to India’s democratic and constitutional institutions.

Senior leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also remembered Mukherjee on the occasion. They described him as a statesman with deep constitutional insight, a scholar of exceptional depth, and a leader whose humility and dedication to public service left a lasting imprint on national governance.

Pranab Mukherjee, born on December 11, 1935, in Mirati, West Bengal, served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017. Before assuming the presidency, he had a distinguished political career spanning over four decades. A veteran parliamentarian, he held some of the most crucial portfolios in the Union government, including finance, defence and external affairs, and was regarded as one of the most experienced administrators of his time.

Mukherjee played a pivotal role in shaping key policies, steering major economic decisions and strengthening India’s international relations. Known for his encyclopaedic memory, disciplined work ethic and an ability to build consensus across political lines, he was often sought after for guidance by leaders across parties. He was widely referred to as “Pranab Da”, a reflection of the respect and affection he commanded.

Following his presidency, Mukherjee continued to contribute through writings, lectures and public engagements until his death in 2020. His legacy, leaders said, remains a benchmark for statesmanship, constitutional fidelity and dedication to public life.
