Last-Minute TISS Convocation Delay Raises Safety Concerns Among Faculty and Students

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has postponed its 86th convocation ceremony, scheduled for August 2, 2026, just 48 hours before the event, citing “unforeseen circumstances”. The decision, which came shortly before the programme, has surprised students, faculty members and families who had made arrangements to attend the ceremony.

In a circular issued to faculty members on July 31, TISS said, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, TISS' 86th Convocation, scheduled for 2nd August 2026, has been postponed.” The institute added that a revised date and further details would be shared at the earliest.

The convocation was expected to be attended by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as the chief guest, a detail that had been known for some time. The sudden postponement has led to questions among members of the TISS community, with some faculty members expressing concern over the lack of clarity regarding the reason behind the decision.

A faculty member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the timing of the postponement was unusual, as the decision came only two days before the major academic event. The faculty member suggested that concerns over the safety and security of attendees may have contributed to the decision, though no official explanation has been provided by the institute.

The controversy surrounding the CJI’s earlier remarks, including criticism from the Cockroach Janta Party, which emerged after the NEET paper leak protests, has also drawn attention in connection with the event. However, TISS has not linked the postponement to any specific issue.

The delay has affected graduating students and their families, many of whom had already invited parents and relatives for the ceremony. The institute acknowledged the importance of the occasion and expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of students, families, faculty and staff.

TISS said it would announce the new convocation date and additional details once arrangements are finalised.
