India endured a mixed yet determined day at the Asian Boxing U-17 Championships 2026 in Tashkent , with young boxer Lakshay Phogat emerging as the country’s lone finalist while four other Indian pugilists signed off with bronze medals after fighting hard in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Competing in the 75kg category , Lakshay delivered one of India’s most convincing performances of the tournament. The Indian boxer dominated South Korea’s Seungmin Lee from the opening round and secured a commanding 5:0 unanimous decision victory , comfortably punching his way into the final and keeping India’s gold medal hopes alive.

While Lakshay celebrated a memorable win, the rest of the Indian contingent faced tough challenges against strong opponents from Uzbekistan and Mongolia in the semifinal stage.

In the 46kg division , Narendra Nella struggled against Uzbekistan’s Abdulloh Nuraliev and went down 0:5 in a one-sided contest. Yash Yadav , competing in the 50kg category , put up a spirited fight against Mongolia’s Suld Usukhbaatar but eventually lost 1:4 after a competitive bout.

India’s Nivesh Pal also found the going difficult in the 54kg semifinal , suffering a 0:5 defeat against Uzbekistan’s Abdulbosit Yursunboev , who looked sharp and technically superior throughout the match.

The closest contest of the day came in the 70kg category , where Naman pushed Uzbekistan’s Abduvohid Abdumajidov to the limit in a thrilling encounter. Despite a brave effort, the Indian boxer narrowly lost 2:3 , missing out on a place in the final by the slimmest of margins.

Though four Indian boxers had to settle for bronze medals , the overall campaign once again highlighted the growing depth of India’s youth boxing programme. With Lakshay now carrying the nation’s title hopes into the final, Indian fans will be eager to see whether the youngster can cap off his impressive run with a gold medal finish in Tashkent.
