Newly appointed Ashok Lahiri , who has taken over as Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog , called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday, marking the beginning of his new role in India’s top policy institution.

The meeting came a day after the government announced key appointments to NITI Aayog, with Lahiri named Vice-Chairman and scientist Gobardhan Das inducted as a member. The Prime Minister serves as the Chairperson of the think tank.

Lahiri, currently a BJP MLA in West Bengal, brings with him over four decades of experience in economics and public policy. A former Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India , he also served on the 15th Finance Commission , contributing to key fiscal recommendations. His career has included significant roles at global institutions such as the World Bank, IMF, and Asian Development Bank , making him one of India’s most experienced economists in policy design and macroeconomic management. An alumnus of the Delhi School of Economics and Presidency University, Kolkata , Lahiri has been closely associated with issues related to India’s economic reforms and West Bengal’s development.

Meanwhile, Gobardhan Das expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving in NITI Aayog. In a personal note shared on social media, Das described the appointment as a deeply meaningful moment in his life.

Coming from a humble background in a remote village in West Bengal, Das said he belongs to an ordinary farming family and has grown up with the values of hard work, struggle, and rural life. He said the new responsibility represents not just a position, but the hopes and aspirations of countless ordinary citizens.

Das, who currently serves as the Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal , has built a strong academic reputation in the field of molecular medicine and immunology . Formerly associated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) , he has contributed extensively to biomedical research and scientific leadership.

He also stated that improving the quality of life in rural areas, among farmers, and for underserved communities would remain central to his work. Pledging full commitment, he said he would work with honesty and dedication under the guidance of the Prime Minister.

With both appointments now in place, the new leadership at NITI Aayog is expected to bring together economic expertise and scientific innovation , reinforcing the institution’s role in shaping India’s long-term development strategy.
