Kylian Mbappé To Donate France’s World Cup 2026 Earnings As Team Secures $30 Million Prize Money

France's campaign at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 ended without a place in the final after a 2-0 semi final defeat to Spain in Dallas, with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal , converted from the penalty spot, and Pedro Porro sealing the result. The loss ended France's run of 358 minutes without conceding a goal in the tournament and marked their worst World Cup finish since 2014. France have already secured approximately $30.2 million by reaching the semifinals and will now face the loser of the England versus Argentina semi final, played in Atlanta, in the third place playoff at MetLife Stadium in Miami on Saturday, a day before the final. A win would push their total to roughly $34.9 million, while a defeat would still leave them with around $31.6 million.

Under FIFA's prize structure for this tournament, the largest in World Cup history at $871 million, champions receive $50 million, runners up take $33 million and the third place finisher earns $29 million, with every participating federation guaranteed a minimum of $12.5 million regardless of performance. The French Football Federation typically allocates around 30 percent of its prize money as player bonuses, retaining the rest for grassroots and youth development programmes.

Despite the payout, star forward Kylian Mbappé is expected to keep none of it. The 27 year old has donated every euro earned from playing for France since 2018, including the roughly $500,000 he received after the 2018 World Cup win, given to the charity Premiers de Cordée . He has since funded medical care for a Mauritanian infant and donated over 180,000 euros in 2023 to staff protecting the French team. Separately, 30 percent of his overall earnings go to his own IBKM Foundation .

On the pitch, Mbappé remains level with Lionel Messi on eight goals in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot , leading on the assists tiebreaker with three to Messi's two, setting up a possible showdown if Argentina also reach Saturday's bronze final.
