Kyiv Under Fire: Russian Missiles and Drones Kill 14, Trigger Alarm Across Europe

Russia launched a massive overnight missile-and-drone barrage against Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions on August 20, killing at least 14 people and injuring about 40, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack lasted for hours and struck 28 locations, placing further pressure on Ukraine’s stretched air-defence network.

The barrage combined ballistic and cruise missiles with jet-powered drones. Ukraine’s air force reported 168 drones, alongside dozens of missiles. Ukrainian defences intercepted most drones and many cruise missiles, but ballistic missiles remained the biggest challenge. Recent attacks have exposed a severe shortage of US-made Patriot interceptors, one of Ukraine’s few systems capable of effectively engaging Russian ballistic threats. International stocks are also under pressure because of the war involving Iran and competing global demand.

The consequences in Kyiv were severe. Strikes damaged residential buildings in the Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts. In Solomianskyi, the top two floors of a nine-storey apartment building were destroyed and fires spread through other floors. People were trapped under rubble and in shelters. A medical facility, including a children’s hospital, and an educational institution were also damaged. Power supplies were disrupted in parts of the capital.

Russia said it targeted defence-related facilities, including an industrial site allegedly producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles, drone production and storage sites, an ammunition depot and a logistics centre. Ukrainian officials, however, highlighted the civilian damage.

Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to allies for more Patriot interceptors and additional air-defence systems, including SAMP/T, NASAMS and HAWK missiles. Kyiv argues that replenishing stocks is urgent as Russia intensifies ballistic attacks.

The assault also triggered defensive measures beyond Ukraine. Poland activated military aviation, ground-based air defence and radar surveillance, while Polish and NATO aircraft monitored its airspace. In Romania, an unidentified drone crashed and caught fire near the Ukrainian border, prompting two Spanish F-18s on NATO air-policing duty to scramble and monitor nearby aerial targets. Moldova reported an unauthorized drone entering its airspace, underscoring the growing risk of the war spilling across Ukraine’s borders.
