At least one person was killed and eight others were injured after Russia launched an overnight missile attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv , local authorities said. The assault, which reportedly involved ballistic missiles , lasted for several hours, sending residents rushing to shelters as loud explosions echoed across the city.

The attack began around 1:30 am local time , with multiple blasts reported from different parts of the capital. The bombardment sparked fires in five districts , damaging residential buildings, office complexes, industrial facilities, a dormitory and several vehicles, according to Ukraine's emergency services.

Rescue teams carried out operations through the night to evacuate people trapped inside burning buildings. In the Sviatoshynskyi district , firefighters rescued four people from a private house engulfed in flames. In the Shevchenkivskyi district , emergency personnel evacuated residents from a burning three-storey residential building before later recovering the body of one victim.

Firefighters were also deployed to contain blazes in the Solomyanskyi, Desnianskyi and Dnipro districts , preventing further damage as emergency crews continued search and rescue operations.

The latest assault is part of a series of large-scale Russian attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, increasing pressure on Ukraine's air defence systems. Kyiv has repeatedly warned that it is facing a shortage of Patriot air defence missiles , considered the country's most effective weapon against incoming ballistic missile attacks.

Amid growing concerns over Ukraine's air defence capabilities, US President Donald Trump recently said Washington is prepared to grant Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot interceptor missiles domestically. While the proposal could strengthen Ukraine's ability to counter future attacks, officials have not yet announced a timeline or operational details for implementing the plan.

The renewed strike highlights the continuing intensity of the conflict, with civilians once again bearing the brunt of overnight attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
