Kunal Kamra Cancels Bengaluru Whitefield Shows Amid Hindutva Protest

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has cancelled his scheduled comedy shows at URU Whitefield in Bengaluru after protests by Hindutva activists, but the performances will go ahead at a new venue in Koramangala, police and the comedian confirmed.

Kamra visited the Whitefield Police Station on Sunday and informed officers that he would not proceed with the Whitefield shows because of the opposition.

"He came to the police station and was informed that he has decided to cancel the event scheduled in Whitefield due to the opposition by Hindutva activists," a senior police officer said.

The controversy erupted after the Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti submitted a petition to the Bengaluru Police seeking cancellation of Kamra's August 3 performance at URU Whitefield. The organisation alleged that the comedian had disrespected Hindu deities in his performances and argued that allowing the event could disturb law and order and religious harmony.

Despite the cancellation at Whitefield, Kamra clarified that his Bengaluru tour has not been cancelled. In a post on X, he announced that the shows scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday have been shifted to a venue in Koramangala.

He also said that BookMyShow would automatically process refunds for tickets booked for the Whitefield venue and requested fans who still wished to attend to book tickets for the Koramangala performances, noting that the new venue has limited seating capacity.

The relocation appears to be moving ahead as planned, with tickets for the Koramangala shows already being circulated online ahead of the performances.

As of Monday afternoon, there have been no reports of clashes, arrests or police cases linked to the protests over the Bengaluru shows. There has also been no official statement from the Karnataka government or the Whitefield venue regarding the cancellation.

The latest episode adds to a series of controversies surrounding Kamra's stand-up performances in recent years. Several of his shows across India have previously faced protests from right-wing groups over allegations that his comedy targets Hindu religious beliefs, resulting in venue changes or cancellations. This time too, while the original venue was dropped following objections, the comedian has opted to continue his performances at an alternate location instead.
