Kukatpally’s Nalla Cheruvu shines in a new avatar
Once filled with debris and encroachments, the Nalla Cheruvu lake in Kukatpally has undergone a remarkable transformation. Within just six months, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has turned the neglected lake into a refreshing recreational spot for city residents. Today, the lake brims with clean water and has become a popular destination for boating and evening strolls.
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath personally inspected the progress of the lake development. He instructed officials to ensure the completion of a seamless walking track around the lake and emphasized the need for CCTV surveillance to enhance safety. Plans are also in place to build children’s play zones and resting pavilions for visitors. The Commissioner suggested planting medicinal and native plants around the lake to promote a healthy and green environment.
Locals, who once saw the lake reduced to a polluted dumping ground, are delighted with its revival. Thanks to recent rains, the water level has risen by nearly four meters, expanding the lake’s storage capacity and restoring its ecological balance. Proper drainage and wastewater management have eliminated the foul smell that once plagued the area.
Earlier, encroachments had reduced Nalla Cheruvu’s area to just 16 acres, but HYDRAA has reclaimed it to its original 30-acre extent using official land records. About 16 illegal commercial sheds were removed as part of the restoration drive. The ongoing works include walking paths, benches, modern lighting, and children’s play areas. A special stage for Bathukamma celebrations and a small immersion pond are also being built nearby.
“In just six months, Nalla Cheruvu has completely changed its face. Families can now come here to relax and enjoy nature. This has become a matter of pride for our city,” said Commissioner Ranganath.
City residents echo his sentiments - weekends now see hundreds of families visiting the spot to unwind. Once a symbol of neglect, Nalla Cheruvu has been reborn as a clean, green, and vibrant lake, winning the hearts of the people.
