KTR Calls for Grand Celebration of ‘Vijay Divas’ Tomorrow
Telangana’s historic journey toward statehood will be commemorated tomorrow as ‘Vijay Divas’ across the state, following a call by BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) to party leaders and workers. During a teleconference with MLAs, MLCs, and district presidents on Sunday, KTR outlined the plans and significance of the day.
KTR highlighted that on December 9, 2009, the central government responded to the hunger strike initiated by BRS President K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), leading to the formal process of Telangana’s state formation. He noted that just as November 29 is observed as ‘Deeksha Divas’ marking the start of KCR’s historic hunger strike, December 9 should be celebrated as ‘Vijay Divas’—a festival commemorating the success of the 11-day protest that fulfilled the 60-year dream of Telangana’s people. KTR emphasized that this day is an opportunity to honor the sacrifices of students and citizens during the movement and to educate future generations about the struggle for statehood.
Constituency-level celebrations
Considering the upcoming rural local body elections and busy schedules of party members, KTR directed that celebrations this year be held primarily at constituency centers. Planned activities include:
The celebrations at constituency centers will include performing ritual ablutions at Telangana Thalli statues, paying floral tributes at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statues, distributing fruits to patients in government hospitals, releasing pink balloons at party offices and public gathering points, and organizing media interactions to share the history of KCR’s hunger strike and the Telangana movement.
Special programs in Hyderabad
In Hyderabad, fruit distribution programs will be organized under the supervision of T. Srinivas Yadav at NIMS Hospital and Gandhi Hospital—where KCR had received treatment after his hunger strike. Party leaders in the city have been urged to actively participate, while district presidents and constituency in-charges are tasked with ensuring smooth coordination.
Significance of ‘Vijay Divas’
“Vijay Divas’ marks a pivotal milestone in Telangana’s statehood movement. On November 29, 2009, KCR began an indefinite hunger strike demanding a separate Telangana state. The 11-day protest drew nationwide attention and student support, pressuring the central government to initiate the state formation process on December 9, 2009. This day represents the official acknowledgment of Telangana’s 60-year-long aspiration, which the BRS party now celebrates as ‘Vijay Divas.’
Historical Sites
The NIMS and Gandhi Hospitals in Hyderabad, where KCR was treated during the hunger strike, serve as key locations commemorating this historic victory.
