A 23-year-old college student was killed and nearly 45 passengers were injured after a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus allegedly overturned in Channagiri taluk of Davanagere district on Friday, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Darshan , a resident of Kundru village in Honnali taluk , who was pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree . He was travelling to his college when the accident occurred.

According to police, the incident took place near Marabanahalli when the bus, travelling from Davanagere to Honnali , reportedly lost control after its rear axle allegedly broke . The vehicle subsequently toppled, causing multiple passengers to suffer injuries.

Most of the injured sustained minor injuries and were admitted to a hospital in Davanagere for treatment. Six passengers with grievous injuries have been shifted to Manipal Hospital for advanced care. The bus driver was also among those injured.

“About 45 passengers were injured in the accident. Most of them have sustained minor injuries, while six with serious injuries have been referred to Manipal Hospital,” Davanagere Superintendent of Police Shekhar H Tekkannavar said.

Following the accident, locals gathered at the site and expressed concern over the shortage of KSRTC buses operating on the route. The situation was later brought under control by police personnel.
