Kota Woman Dies After C-Section At JK Lone Hospital, Second Maternal Death In 24 Hours
A 25-year-old woman died after a C-section at Kota’s JK Lone Hospital, the second maternal death at the hospital within 24 hours. The death came after she delivered twins, while authorities have also denied rumours that a drug reaction caused her death.
The woman, identified as Karina, wife of Amir Khan from Ladpura village in the Kaithun area, delivered a boy and a girl after an emergency C-section. Hospital officials said her blood pressure was found to be very high when she arrived.
According to hospital records, Karina had been prescribed blood pressure medicine from her seventh month of pregnancy, although her family said she was unaware of the condition. Doctors also found changes in her blood tests that suggested her liver and kidney functions could have been affected.
Karina was reportedly fine after the delivery and spoke with her family on Monday night. Around 3:30 am on Tuesday, her condition suddenly worsened. She developed vomiting, rapid breathing, anxiety and seizures.
Doctors said she suffered postpartum eclampsia. They said vomit entered her lungs during the seizure, causing her oxygen level to fall from 86% to 62%. Her blood pressure also dropped to 90/60 mmHg.
The hospital said she later developed serious breathing problems and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), which caused bleeding. Despite emergency treatment and efforts by specialists, she died.
Her husband, however, alleged that her condition worsened after she was given an intravenous fluid. He said Karina had been having regular pregnancy check-ups and that no major complication had been reported to the family.
Authorities have refuted rumours of a drug reaction being responsible for her death and maintained that the medical complications were linked to her condition after delivery.
Karina’s death came just a day after 34-year-old Gangotri Saini died at the same hospital after childbirth. She had delivered a healthy baby about 30 hours before her death. Her family had alleged medical negligence, while hospital officials cited high blood pressure and Hepatitis B among her health problems.
The two deaths have renewed attention on maternal care at JK Lone Hospital, which has faced scrutiny after several serious maternal cases in Kota earlier this year. Experts from AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Jodhpur had also examined earlier cases as part of efforts to determine why women developed severe complications after childbirth.
