A protest by residents displaced by mining operations at the Gevra coal mine in Chhattisgarh turned violent on Thursday, with villagers alleging that personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) lathi-charged them during a demonstration seeking employment, rehabilitation, and compensation.

The protest was organised by local farmers and members of the Chhattisgarh Kisan Sabha, who said they were peacefully raising long-standing demands when CISF personnel intervened. Several protesters, including local leaders, were reportedly injured and taken to the Dipka police station, prompting more villagers to gather outside the station demanding action against the officer who ordered the use of force.

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), which operates the Gevra mine, said that a few protesters tried to enter a restricted area inside the mining zone where heavy machinery operates. According to the company, CISF personnel acted to prevent disruption of coal production and ensure safety.

Observers say the latest protest may also have political undertones, with local groups attempting to mobilise support by highlighting unresolved grievances. Yet, the sentiments among the villagers appear rooted in a sense of loss and incomplete rehabilitation after decades of mining activity.

Dipka police have said the incident and the CISF’s use of force are under investigation.

The episode underscores the need for consistent engagement between SECL and local communities to ensure that economic progress is matched by inclusive rehabilitation and lasting goodwill.
