Kolkata Police Unable to Serve Notice to Abhishek Banerjee in Camac Street Case
Kolkata Police on Wednesday visited the residence of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in Kalighat to serve him a notice for another round of questioning in connection with the Camac Street party office hoarding case, but could not serve it, an officer said.
A team from the Shakespeare Sarani police station went to Banerjee’s residence in the evening. The officers were informed that the TMC leader was in Delhi and that no one was available to receive the notice. The police team subsequently returned without serving it.
Another police team also visited the south Kolkata residence of TMC leader Humayun Kabir to serve him a summons, asking him to appear before investigators at the Shakespeare Sarani police station in connection with the same incident.
The case relates to a disturbance on August 27 during the removal of a billboard from a building on Camac Street housing Banerjee’s office. The billboard carried the TMC name and its twin-flower symbol.
Police and Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials faced protests from supporters of Banerjee during the removal of the billboard. The incident led to the registration of three FIRs at the Shakespeare Sarani police station.
Banerjee has already appeared at the police station in one of the cases and was questioned by investigators for several hours. Police are now seeking to question him again as part of their investigation.
Officials had been considering October 9 for the fresh questioning. However, the date has not been finalised as the notice could not be served on Banerjee, the officer said.
The latest move comes as police continue their investigation into the events surrounding the removal of the hoarding and the protests that followed.
The case has drawn attention because the billboard was located at a building housing the office of Banerjee, a prominent TMC leader and nephew of Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
