Kolkata Police STF Busts Interstate Ganja Smuggling Racket in Purulia, 7 Detained

The Kolkata Police Special Task Force (STF), in coordination with the Purulia district police, has busted an alleged interstate drug trafficking racket and detained seven people during an operation in West Bengal's Purulia district, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday.

According to Adhikari, the joint team intercepted a truck on Monday night near the Belkuri Toll Plaza on NH-18, under the jurisdiction of Purulia Muffasil police station. A large quantity of ganja was allegedly recovered from a specially concealed cavity located behind the driver's seat of the truck.

The truck was reportedly travelling from Odisha towards Asansol when it was intercepted by the law enforcement agencies. Two escort vehicles that were travelling alongside the truck were also stopped during the operation, leading to the detention of seven individuals.

The chief minister did not disclose the exact quantity or estimated value of the contraband seized during the operation.

Commending the action, Adhikari praised the police forces for what he described as a swift and coordinated operation. He said the recovery demonstrated the vigilance and determination of the state's law enforcement agencies in tackling organised drug trafficking.

The chief minister reiterated that the West Bengal government follows a "zero-tolerance policy" towards illegal drug trafficking and other unlawful activities that pose a threat to young people and society.

Adhikari also appreciated the police personnel for their continued vigilance and dedication, stressing that the government would remain committed to dismantling criminal networks involved in the illegal drug trade.

The latest operation comes amid continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the movement of narcotics through interstate routes connecting West Bengal with neighbouring states.
