Kohli’s surprise U-turn, back to Vijay Hazare after 15 years

In a major boost for Delhi cricket, Virat Kohli has informed the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) that he will be available for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, marking his return to India’s domestic one-day tournament after a long gap of 15 years. The Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier 50-over domestic tournament, is held annually and features state teams competing in a format that mirrors international one-day cricket.

Kohli’s decision comes just days after his post-match comments in Ranchi, where he suggested he did not need additional preparation before international fixtures, remarks that reportedly did not sit well with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has been encouraging senior players to participate more regularly in domestic cricket.

DDCA officials confirmed his availability, calling it a reaffirmation of the senior batter’s commitment. “Virat has confirmed his availability for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He will be playing matches at the Centre of Excellence,” the association said. Delhi will begin their campaign against Andhra Pradesh in Alur on December 24.

His change of mind followed a match-winning 135 in the second ODI against South Africa, after which he said, “I’ve never been a big believer in a lot of preparation… All my cricket has been mental. As long as I feel good mentally, I can play the game.” With nearly two decades of top-level experience, he added that he rarely feels the need for additional match practice.

For Delhi, Kohli’s participation is both strategic and symbolic. A player of his stature naturally draws attention, giving the team greater visibility heading into the season. With the likely inclusion of Rishabh Pant as well, the dressing room is set for a significant boost as Delhi look to strengthen their one-day campaign.

Kohli’s return to domestic colours brings nostalgia, renewed energy, and a rare opportunity for the younger squad members to learn from one of modern cricket’s greatest players.
