Kochi Metro Renaming Plan Draws CM Satheesan’s Objection Over Lack of Consultation
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan has said the state government was neither consulted nor informed about the proposal to rename Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) as Keralam Metro Rail Limited, raising questions over the process followed by the metro company in initiating the proposed rebranding.
Speaking to reporters at his constituency in North Paravur on Friday, Satheesan said the government had no prior knowledge of the proposal and that he came to know about it only through newspaper reports. He stressed that no discussion had taken place with the government and that the proposed name change was not currently under its consideration.
The remarks came a day after KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera announced the proposal, seeking in-principle approval from the state government. KMRL has argued that its existing name has become too city-centric as its responsibilities have expanded beyond the Kochi Metro network.
The organisation is now involved in Kochi Water Metro, electric mobility initiatives and the planning and implementation of proposed metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. KMRL, a 50:50 joint venture between the Centre and Kerala government, wants the proposed name to better reflect its emerging role as a statewide urban transport agency.
However, the proposal is still at the recommendation stage and has not been approved. Even if the state government gives its in-principle consent, the change would require further approval from the KMRL Board, shareholders, Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs and the Central Government.
KMRL has said the proposed rebranding would not affect its assets, liabilities, contracts, employees or legal status, while related branding expenses would be met from its own budget.
The proposal has also drawn opposition from Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, who wrote to Satheesan objecting to the move. The controversy has consequently shifted from a simple branding exercise to a question of consultation and institutional procedure.
Meanwhile, Satheesan said welfare pensions would be distributed early ahead of Onam as Kerala recovers from recent floods and landslides caused by monsoon rains. He also said the government was examining a Sports Department report on alleged irregularities linked to the previous government's proposed Argentina-Lionel Messi football match.
On the ED investigation involving Veena T, daughter of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Satheesan declined to comment, saying it would be inappropriate to intervene while a central agency investigation remains underway.
