India will aim to keep their journey towards a second Thomas Cup title alive when they meet a strong Chinese Taipei side in the quarterfinals on Friday, in what promises to be a closely fought contest between two balanced teams.

India, the reigning champions after their historic triumph in 2022, enter the knockout stage with momentum but also lessons from a mixed group stage campaign. They began strongly with a 4 1 win over Canada and followed it up with a dominant 5 0 victory over Australia , but were tested in their final group match where they went down 2 3 to China after a hard fought battle.

Their quarterfinal opponents, Chinese Taipei, bring significant firepower, especially in singles. The challenge will largely revolve around world number 6 Chou Tien Chen , along with world number 8 Lin Chun Yi , the All England champion, and world number 21 Chi Yu Jen , forming a strong and experienced singles lineup. In doubles, they are equally well equipped with the world number 14 pair Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi Lin , and the world number 16 duo Lee Jhe Huei and Yang Po Hsuan , making them a well rounded threat across categories.

India, however, have shown encouraging depth throughout the tournament. Young shuttler Ayush Shetty has emerged as a bright spot, remaining unbeaten so far with key wins over Brian Yang and Weng Hong Yang , continuing his strong run from the Badminton Asia Championships. In the experienced bracket, HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth have shared duties in the third singles position, with Srikanth producing a notable comeback win against China’s Lu Guang Zu , while Prannoy continues to play his stabilising role similar to the 2022 title winning campaign.

At the top, Lakshya Sen has impressed despite narrow losses in two three game encounters, pushing higher ranked opponents to the limit. In doubles, the world class pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty started strong with two wins before narrowly losing a close match to China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang , in what was Satwik’s first major tournament after returning from a shoulder injury. Their performance has still provided positive signs heading into the knockout stage. The second doubles pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun have also contributed well with two wins in three matches, giving India greater balance in the tie.

India, who also won bronze medals in 1952, 1955 and 1979 , now stand just one step away from the semifinals, but will need to overcome a well structured and in form Chinese Taipei side to continue their title defence hopes.
