Kishan Reddy Visits PVK-5 Mine, Reaffirms Zero-Accident Policy and ₹1 Crore Insurance

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy visited the 74-year-old PVK–5 underground coal mine in the Kothagudem region, reaffirming that worker safety and welfare remain top priorities for the Central Government. During the visit, he highlighted the implementation of a “Zero Accident Mine Policy” , aimed at ensuring a hazard-free working environment in coal mines. He also reiterated that mine workers have been provided ₹1 crore insurance coverage , a measure intended to offer financial security and confidence to workers’ families in the event of fatal accidents.

Interacting with Singareni officials, the Minister stressed that the company must focus on operational efficiency and diversification rather than controversies. He advised the management to accelerate coal gasification projects, washeries, and pumped hydro initiatives to add long-term value to coal assets, especially as some underground mines approach closure in the coming years. He also directed officials to ensure recovery of pending dues and maintain strict financial discipline, underlining that diversification is essential for Singareni’s sustainability in a changing energy landscape.

The visit assumes added significance amid an ongoing probe into Naini coal block tender irregularities , with a technical committee constituted by the Centre and parallel reviews initiated by the Telangana government. Against this backdrop, Kishan Reddy emphasised that Singareni Collieries Company Limited should be kept free from political interference and run purely as a workers’ organisation. He urged workers and trade unions to remain united , stating that collective effort is essential to protect the institution, which serves as a lifeline for lakhs of families in Telangana and beyond.

During his interaction with miners at the Kothagudem underground mine, the Minister listened to their grievances and appreciated their discipline, dedication, and commitment . He noted that nearly three-fourths of India’s electricity generation depends on coal , making the contribution of every Singareni worker vital to national development. Praising their perseverance and hard work, he described Singareni miners as the real heroes who form the backbone of the country’s energy security, and stressed that welfare measures must be implemented transparently and extended effectively to all eligible workers, including contract employees.
