Kishan Reddy Urges Telangana to Sign NTPC Power Purchase Agreements
Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy has called on the Telangana government to move quickly in securing long-term electricity supplies by signing power purchase agreements with NTPC . In a public letter addressed to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy , the Union Minister said such agreements would help the state meet its rapidly rising energy needs while ensuring electricity is available at competitive and stable prices in the years ahead.
Kishan Reddy pointed out that the NTPC Ramagundam thermal power station in Peddapalli district is equipped with advanced ultra-supercritical technology , enabling the plant to generate electricity more efficiently and at a lower cost compared to conventional thermal stations. According to him, Telangana stands to benefit significantly if it signs agreements to purchase power from the project, especially as demand continues to grow due to expanding agriculture, industrial activity and urban development.
Emphasising the urgency of the issue, the Union Minister noted that Telangana recorded a peak electricity demand of 18,139 MW on March 3 , reflecting the state’s rapidly increasing consumption. He also cited earlier remarks by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka , who had indicated that Telangana’s electricity requirement could rise sharply and may reach nearly 1,00,000 MW by 2047 . In view of these projections, Kishan Reddy said the state government must adopt long-term energy planning and secure reliable sources of power well in advance.
The Telangana Super Thermal Power Project at Ramagundam was designed with a total planned capacity of 4,000 MW . As part of the first phase , two 800 MW units with a combined capacity of 1,600 MW were constructed at an investment of around ₹12,000 crore . These units were dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 , marking a major addition to the region’s power infrastructure.
NTPC has already begun preparations for the second phase of the project , which includes three more 800 MW units . Once these units become operational, a substantial portion of the electricity generated around 85 percent is expected to be supplied to Telangana, further strengthening the state’s power availability.
In his letter, Kishan Reddy also requested the state government to provide full operational flexibility to NTPC in procuring coal required for the five 800-MW units planned at the Ramagundam facility . Ensuring adequate coal supply, he said, would help the project produce reliable and affordable electricity on a sustained basis.
Urging swift action, the Union Minister appealed to the Chief Minister to personally intervene and facilitate the signing of power purchase agreements with NTPC . He stressed that such a step would not only help the state meet its future electricity demand but also strengthen Telangana’s long-term energy security and industrial growth .
