Kiran Pisda’s journey from a remote tribal region of Chhattisgarh to international football arenas is truly remarkable. With determination, discipline, and courage , she has carved a distinct identity for herself.
Kiran hails from a remote tribal area in Chhattisgarh. Her family and school played a crucial role in her growth. Notably, her brother Girish , a national-level footballer, inspired her early interest in the sport. Despite limited resources in tribal regions, her talent attracted attention. Recognizing her determination at the school level, her teachers encouraged her—laying the foundation for her future.
Early Training and State-Level Success
During her school years, Kiran earned opportunities to compete at state and national levels , with each success boosting her confidence. Excelling in sports from a state like Chhattisgarh was not easy, yet she persevered relentlessly. Moving from a rural setting to the city marked a turning point in her life. She later shifted to Raipur , where she pursued a degree in Physical Education , gaining a more scientific understanding of sports.
National Camp Call and First Setback
Kiran’s impressive performance in the Chhattisgarh Women’s League caught the attention of national team scouts, earning her a call-up to a national training camp. However, she faced disappointment, acknowledging that she lacked the physical fitness and mental maturity required at the time. Despite not making the national team, she chose not to give up and instead worked on her shortcomings.
After returning from the camp, Kiran focused on rebuilding herself. Through rigorous training, she improved her fitness and began analysing matches to better understand her positioning on the field. Realising that negative thinking affected her performance, she adopted a positive mindset, an approach that later shaped her into a stronger player.
Guidance of Coach Yogesh Kumar Jangra
Behind every successful athlete stands a great mentor, and for Kiran, that role was played by Coach Yogesh Kumar Jangra . Whenever she faced setbacks or dissatisfaction with her performance, he motivated her. Beyond technical skills, he taught her how to stay mentally strong. Even today, she proudly says he is the first person she consults during difficult times.
Versatility and Kerala Blasters
Her performances in domestic football earned her opportunities with prominent clubs like Kerala Blasters . Kiran’s versatility sets her apart—she has played as a striker, midfielder, and currently as a full-back for the national team. She believes adapting to the team’s needs is a hallmark of a professional footballer, making her a favourite among coaches.
International Stage and European Experience
Kiran has represented India multiple times and was part of the 2022 SAFF Championship squad. A major milestone in her career was playing for Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia’s women’s league. Exposure to European football standards and training methods introduced her to a new world. A tribal-origin Indian woman excelling internationally is a matter of pride for the nation.
Despite her achievements, Kiran has faced setbacks. Missing selection for major tournaments like the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia was disappointing. However, she turned that disappointment into motivation.
“Not being selected does not mean you are a bad player; it means you need to work harder,” she says. This mature mindset sets her apart, as she emphasises learning to handle pressure as the key to success.
Importance of Khelo India Tribal Games
Kiran stresses the importance of platforms like the Khelo India Tribal Games in identifying talent from tribal regions. She notes that many talented individuals remain unnoticed due to lack of opportunities. Recently, in the tournament, she took on goalkeeping duties during a semifinal shootout against Arunachal Pradesh , helping her team secure victory. She describes such events as stepping stones for tribal youth to reach the national level.
Currently, Kiran is focused on securing her place in the Indian Women’s League and the national team. Her goal is to represent India in more major international tournaments. Emerging from a state like Chhattisgarh, she stands as a role model for young athletes. Her message is simple:
“With hard work, one can reach any peak.”
Kiran Pisda’s story is not just about a footballer, it is a powerful testament to self-belief, perseverance, and determination .
