King Charles III will visit America despite calls to cancel over Donald Trump's war in Iran

Britain’s King Charles III will proceed with a planned state visit to the United States later this month despite rising political criticism and fresh remarks from Donald Trump warning that the United States “won’t be there to help” Britain amid tensions over the ongoing Iran war .

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the king and Queen Camilla will travel to the US from April 27 to April 30 to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence .

The announcement came around 40 minutes after Trump criticised Britain’s refusal to join the US-led war against Iran , saying countries that declined to support Washington militarily should not expect American assistance. Posting online, Trump said allies should “learn to fight for yourselves”, adding that the United States “won’t be there to help” the UK anymore .

Trump has repeatedly attacked the government of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for refusing to allow wider use of British bases in American operations against Iran, widening a rare public rift between the two long-standing allies.

Despite the tensions, the visit will go ahead and is widely seen as an attempt by Starmer’s government to maintain the historic UK-US “special relationship.”

The trip will be Charles’s first state visit to the United States since becoming king , although he has visited the country 19 times previously as Prince of Wales. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II , made four state visits to the US during her reign.

The visit is expected to include a state dinner at the White House and a rare address by the king to a joint session of the US Congress , highlighting the historic ties between the two nations.

However, the decision to proceed has drawn criticism from some British politicians. Ed Davey , leader of the Liberal Democrats, accused the government of showing “a staggering lack of backbone” by allowing the visit despite Trump’s attacks on Britain.

“To send the king on a state visit after Trump dismissed our Royal Navy as toys is a humiliation,” Davey said, arguing that the trip risks placing the monarch in the middle of a political dispute.

The visit follows Trump’s state trip to Britain last year, when he was hosted by the king at Windsor Castle during a ceremonial reception.

On his return journey, Charles will also travel to Bermuda , marking his first visit to the territory as monarch .
