King Charles III has arrived in Washington for a state visit taking place amid diplomatic strain between the United Kingdom and the United States, alongside heightened security concerns and political sensitivities involving both governments.

The visit coincides with celebrations marking the US 250th anniversary and comes at a time of broader transatlantic friction, including differences over foreign policy, NATO responsibilities, and the approach toward Iran. Recent remarks by US President Donald Trump criticising UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO allies have added to the political backdrop, even as Trump has also described King Charles as a “friend” and expressed support for the visit.

Security arrangements were reviewed after a shooting incident at a Washington dinner attended by Trump, prompting a temporary reassessment of the programme. Buckingham Palace later confirmed the visit would proceed with enhanced coordination between UK and US security agencies.

The itinerary begins in Washington with a private meeting between King Charles III and President Trump, followed by a formal White House state dinner and additional ceremonial engagements. A key highlight is the King’s scheduled address to the US Congress , only the second by a British monarch after Queen Elizabeth II in 1991, with expected themes including democracy, shared history, environmental concerns, and international cooperation.

The programme continues with a visit to New York, including the September 11 memorial , before moving to Virginia for anniversary-related public events and a commemorative “block party.” The King is also expected to meet Indigenous leaders focused on environmental conservation.

The visit has triggered political debate in the UK, with some opposition figures questioning its timing and raising concerns about potential diplomatic embarrassment, while others stress its value as an exercise in soft power diplomacy .

It also unfolds amid renewed scrutiny of royal family matters, including attention on Prince Andrew and his past association with Jeffrey Epstein, though this is not part of the official programme. Earlier reports also noted geopolitical sensitivity around broader defence discussions, including speculation linked to UK overseas territories such as the Falklands.
