Kharif–2026 Preparations: State Examines Urea Stock Position And Distribution
With the upcoming Kharif–2026 season in focus, the government has initiated advance measures on fertiliser supply, buffer stocks and the use of nano urea in the state. A high-level review meeting was held on Monday at the Secretariat by Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao with representatives of fertiliser companies and Agriculture Department officials.
The Minister stated that currently 1.46 lakh metric tonnes of urea buffer stock is available in the state. Additionally, around 10,000 metric tonnes of DAP and complex fertilisers are also in stock. For Kharif–2026 , the state government had requested the Centre to allocate 11.50 lakh metric tonnes of urea , but the Centre has restricted it to 10 lakh metric tonnes , he said. As per the Centre’s supply schedule, 2 lakh metric tonnes per month is planned for April, May and June, 1.50 lakh metric tonnes per month for July and August, and 1 lakh metric tonne for September. However, against the April allocation of 2 lakh metric tonnes, only 1.53 lakh metric tonnes reached the state, and in May so far only 48,985 metric tonnes have been supplied, officials informed.
Since paddy transplantation is expected to begin in the first week of June, the Minister directed officials to ensure a buffer stock of at least 3.50 lakh metric tonnes of urea by the end of May. He also instructed them to take urgent steps to procure the remaining allocated urea from the Centre.
The Minister further demanded that 90% of urea produced at the Ramagundam fertiliser factory should be allocated to Telangana farmers, stating that it is unjust that fertiliser produced using the state’s resources is not reaching local farmers. He directed that a letter be sent to the Managing Director of the plant in this regard.
He also instructed officials to create widespread awareness on nano urea usage , and suggested that through the “Rythu Nestham” programme , experiences of farmers using nano urea should be broadcast. Fertiliser companies were urged to actively participate in awareness initiatives, and the Minister stressed that excessive use of urea damages soil fertility, encouraging farmers to shift towards nano urea.
A new Centre-developed app for subsidised fertiliser distribution will be implemented as a pilot project from May 21 in Rangareddy and Medchal districts . The Minister warned that strict action will be taken against wholesale and retail traders selling fertilisers above MRP, and urged farmers to conduct soil testing and use fertilisers judiciously.
The meeting was attended by Special Chief Secretary of Agriculture Department Surendra Mohan , Digital Wing Director Sarita Lakshmi , and Agriculture Director Dr. Gopi , among others.
