Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his death anniversary, remembering him as a leader whose simple life and high moral values continue to inspire the nation.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) , Kharge said Shastri’s ideals of honesty, humility and service remain deeply relevant even today. He recalled Shastri’s famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” , describing it as a powerful symbol of India’s courage, confidence and respect for both soldiers and farmers.

Kharge also highlighted Shastri’s leadership during challenging times, particularly the 1965 war with Pakistan , noting that he stood firmly with the armed forces while also prioritising the welfare of farmers and pushing key reforms.

Lal Bahadur Shastri , India’s second Prime Minister, served from 1964 to 1966 following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru. Known for his personal integrity and modest lifestyle, Shastri led the country through food shortages and external threats, earning widespread respect for his calm and decisive leadership.

Shastri passed away on January 11, 1966 , in Tashkent , shortly after signing a peace agreement with Pakistan. His legacy continues to resonate across generations, with leaders from across political parties, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar , also paying tribute on the occasion.

Kharge’s message underlined that Shastri’s life and principles remain a guiding force for India, especially his enduring call to honour the sacrifices of soldiers and farmers alike.
