Kerala's annual 52-day trawling ban came into force from midnight on June 9 and will remain in effect until midnight on July 31 , with authorities rolling out extensive conservation, enforcement and safety measures to protect marine resources during the monsoon breeding season. The restriction, in force since 1988, is aimed at preventing the destruction of fish eggs, juveniles and brood fish while promoting sustainable fishing practices .

Under the ban, trawling and double-net fishing are prohibited along Kerala's coastline. Traditional fishermen engaged in surface fishing are exempt from the restriction and may continue operations in territorial waters. Boats from other states have been directed to leave Kerala waters, while mechanised vessels must remain anchored at their designated base centres. Authorities have warned of strict legal action against violators.

The Fisheries Department has activated round-the-clock control rooms in all coastal districts and intensified monitoring through joint operations involving Fisheries officials, Marine Enforcement and Coastal Police. District collectors have been instructed to ensure strict compliance and coordinate safety measures during the ban period.

To strengthen maritime safety, the state is deploying 20 private boats for sea patrol and rescue operations, while fisheries ambulances stationed at Vizhinjam and Vypeen will remain operational. Nine FRP patrol boats have also been pressed into service, and the Indian Navy and Coast Guard have been kept on standby for emergencies. The government is additionally moving to recruit 80 trained fishermen as part of a dedicated marine safety force.

The ban coincides with the Centre's 61-day fishing prohibition in the Exclusive Economic Zone along the west coast, effective from June 1 to July 31, except for non-motorised vessels. The state government has also arranged free ration support for workers affected by the suspension of mechanised fishing activities.
