Keralam Allocates Rs 680 Crore for SC, ST Housing Schemes
Keralam Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Sunday announced an allocation of Rs 680.20 crore for special housing schemes for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), taking forward a key promise made in the state’s 2026–27 Budget.
In a Facebook post on October 18, Satheesan said the amount had been included in the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for the current financial year. Of the total, Rs 527.68 crore has been earmarked for the SC housing scheme and Rs 152.52 crore for the ST housing scheme.
The revised Budget proposed a new housing initiative specifically for SC and ST communities. The government had earlier indicated that it would extend support to landless and homeless families, including those who had not received houses under the existing LIFE Mission housing programme.
However, details such as the number of beneficiary families, financial assistance per household, eligibility criteria and implementation timeline have not yet been specified in the announcement.
The state government has also highlighted other welfare priorities, including timely disbursement of educational assistance to SC and ST students through the e-grants system. These measures form part of its broader efforts to improve access to housing, education and social welfare for disadvantaged communities.
