Clashes erupted in Thiruvananthapuram following the Kerala University Union election results , once again spotlighting the deep-rooted culture of violent student politics in the state and the growing influence of mainstream political parties on campuses.

The violence broke out on Monday night after the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) , the student wing of the CPI(M), celebrated its sweeping victory in the university polls, winning 35 of the 37 seats. According to police, confrontations began when rival groups of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) , affiliated with the Congress, and SFI activists clashed near the university campus.

Both organisations traded allegations over who initiated the violence. Police, however, registered an FIR against SFI workers and others, alleging that stones and wooden sticks were used in attacks that left several police personnel injured, including a Station House Officer who reportedly suffered a fractured arm. Water cannons, tear gas and a lathi charge were later used to disperse protesters as the clashes spilled onto public roads.

The incident has reignited concerns over how university elections in Kerala increasingly mirror the state’s larger political rivalries . Student outfits linked to major parties often function as extensions of political organisations, turning campuses into battlegrounds for ideological and organisational dominance.

Critics argue that frequent clashes, aggressive mobilisation and retaliatory politics are shrinking academic space within universities , where debates over education and student welfare are often overshadowed by partisan conflicts. While student politics has historically played a significant role in Kerala’s political culture, recurring violence continues to raise questions about whether campuses are becoming arenas for democratic engagement or rehearsals for mainstream political confrontation.
