Kerala Orders Urgent Review After Heavy Rains Trigger Waterlogging in Thiruvananthapuram

The Kerala government has initiated urgent measures to address severe waterlogging reported in several parts of the state capital following recent rains, with Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph directing officials to investigate the causes behind the flooding.

Speaking on Sunday, the minister said areas including Thampanoor and Chakka had witnessed significant water stagnation and that the government was treating the issue with utmost seriousness. He directed the chief engineer of the irrigation department to submit an immediate report identifying the reasons for the recurring flooding.

According to reports submitted by senior officials, the irrigation department has already granted preliminary approval sought by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the cleaning and restoration of the Parvathy Puthanar and Amayizhanjan canals, key waterways considered crucial for drainage management in the city.

Joseph also said the government was prepared to engage with all stakeholders, including the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, to formulate and implement effective solutions. The minister held discussions with ministers K. Muraleedharan and C. P. John on measures required to tackle the waterlogging problem.

Following the consultations, the government decided to convene a high-level meeting today. The meeting, to be attended by the three ministers and senior officials, will review the causes of waterlogging, assess ongoing interventions, and determine further remedial measures.

The latest flooding incidents have once again drawn attention to urban infrastructure challenges in Kerala's capital. Every monsoon exposes the gap between rapid urban growth and basic city infrastructure, with inadequate drainage networks, encroached waterways, and delayed maintenance often contributing to recurring waterlogging in major urban centres.

The government's response and the outcomes of the upcoming review meeting are expected to shape longer-term measures aimed at improving the city's flood resilience.
