Senior Congress leader V D Satheesan on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene urgently following reports of the death of two Kerala natives and the disappearance of another in flash floods in Oman.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Satheesan expressed deep concern over the tragic incident that occurred on Saturday in Oman’s Al Batinah Governorate, where sudden flash floods claimed the lives of Yusuf and Shamla , both residents of Trithala in Kerala’s Palakkad district. A third person, identified as Ramla , also from the same locality, remains missing .

According to reports, the victims were travelling in a vehicle when it was swept away by rapidly rising floodwaters triggered by intense rainfall in the region. The unexpected surge in water levels left little time for escape, underlining the severity of the weather conditions .

Yusuf, one of the deceased, was reportedly a migrant worker from Trithala who had been living in Oman for several years. He was described by locals as a hardworking individual supporting his family , and his untimely death has left his family and community in deep shock .

Satheesan called on the Centre to coordinate with Omani authorities to intensify search and rescue operations , especially as heavy rains and flood risks continue in the region. He also urged the government to extend all possible assistance to the affected families and ensure the safety of Indian nationals in Oman.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by expatriate workers during extreme weather events in the Gulf region.
