Kerala CM assures justice in Palakkad Lynching case, SIT probing incident

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday assured that justice would be ensured for the family of Ramnarayan , a 31-year-old migrant worker from Chhattisgarh who died following an alleged mob lynching in Walayar, Palakkad district. Describing the incident as deeply disturbing, the chief minister said such acts were completely unacceptable and went against Kerala’s progressive social values.

In a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, Vijayan said strict action would be taken against all those responsible for the crime. A special investigation team (SIT), led by the Palakkad district police chief, has been constituted to probe the incident. The CM said officials have been instructed to thoroughly examine all aspects of the case and initiate appropriate legal proceedings without delay.

The state government will also review the matter to ensure suitable compensation for the victim’s family, Vijayan added, while calling for collective vigilance to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

Ramnarayan was allegedly beaten to death on Wednesday evening at Kizhakeattappallam near Walayar after being accused of involvement in a theft. According to police, he was assaulted by a group of local residents, following which he sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the Palakkad District Government Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

So far, f ive people have been arrested in connection with the case. Police officials said further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses, with the SIT examining eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage, and forensic evidence to establish the sequence of events and individual culpability.

The incident has triggered political reactions and demands for stringent action. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan wrote to the chief minister, urging immediate financial assistance for the bereaved family and strict punishment for the accused. The opposition Congress and the victim’s relatives have also sought an investigation under stringent laws, including the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Ramnarayan’s brother told reporters on Sunday that the family would not accept his body until their demands, including compensation of Rs 25 lakh and a strong legal case against the accused, are met.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister or the state government regarding the incident, though the case has drawn attention due to the victim being a migrant worker from the state.

The killing has once again brought the issue of mob violence and the safety of migrant labourers into sharp focus, with civil society groups urging stronger safeguards and swift justice to deter such crimes.
