Kavitha’s resignation stirs Telangana politics

Telangana politics witnessed a turn with BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) MLC K. Kavitha, daughter of party chief K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), resigning from her Legislative Council seat. Her decision, coming just days after her suspension from the party, has triggered shockwaves across the state’s political circles.

Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy confirmed that Kavitha personally insisted on stepping down despite his advice to reconsider. “I thought it was an emotional decision so I advised her to reconsider her resignation, but she told me she had thought about it carefully and asked me to accept it without delay” he revealed. He added that a formal decision on her resignation would be taken soon.

A calculated exit

Kavitha’s resignation is not being seen as a hasty move but rather as a conscious break from the BRS. Political analysts believe this marks the beginning of a new phase in her career and could potentially signal the birth of an alternative political force in Telangana.

Why she walked away

BRS has been grappling with internal dissent ever since its heavy defeats in both the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Kavitha was arrested in the Delhi liquor case and got bail later, reportedly became very frustrated with the party leaders - especially with her brother - BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR).

According to sources, she felt sidelined during her most difficult period and confided in close aides that the party deliberately distanced itself from her. Her critical remarks about the party’s functioning further widened the rift, eventually leading to her suspension on charges of anti-party activities.

A new political path?

Following her suspension, speculation has been widespread that Kavitha is planning to start her own party. Reports suggest that she has already been holding discussions with disgruntled BRS leaders, former MLAs, and junior party members. Insiders believe she aims to build a party rooted in the ideals of the Telangana statehood movement, positioning herself as a counterforce to her own family’s dominance in BRS.

By resigning from her MLC post, Kavitha has sent out a clear message - she no longer has any association with the BRS and is ready to carve out an independent political journey.

For the BRS, already struggling from electoral defeats and internal turmoil, Kavitha’s resignation is another major blow. Political observers say the exit of KCR’s daughter will further weaken the party organizationally and may encourage more defections in the coming days.

Opposition leaders have gone a step further, calling it the beginning of BRS’s downfall. “This is not just a resignation - it’s a signal that the party is collapsing,” they argue.
