Kavitha Alleges Cover-Up in Singareni Contracts, Slams BRS and Congress

Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Sunday mounted a strong political offensive against both the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Indian National Congress, alleging that the ongoing controversy surrounding Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) contracts is being deliberately manipulated to protect large corporate interests while projecting smaller contractors as scapegoats.

Addressing a media conference at the Telangana Jagruthi office in Banjara Hills , Kavitha alleged that contracts worth nearly ₹25,000 crore are allegedly being steered towards major infrastructure firms , while public debate has been confined to ₹250-crore contracts secured by contractor Srujan Reddy . This, she argued, reflects a calculated attempt to divert attention from high-value tenders and shield what she described as the real “ big fish ” in the Singareni contracts ecosystem.

Kavitha questioned why the BRS leadership has remained silent on allegations that several large Singareni contracts are being aligned in favour of the Megha Group, headed by Megha Krishna Reddy. She further pointed out that Srujan Reddy had received contracts even during the earlier BRS regime, asking why his alleged proximity to the then Chief Minister was never highlighted at that time. She accused certain political leaders and sections of the media of selectively amplifying minor issues while suppressing scrutiny of large-scale financial dealings.

Reiterating that Telangana Jagruthi stands with workers rather than contractors , Kavitha said both BRS and Congress have consistently neglected Singareni workers’ concerns for years. “When workers suffer, no one raises their voice. But when a big contractor faces inconvenience, political parties rush to offer protection,” she remarked, framing the controversy as not merely a political dispute but a labour and governance issue .

On the issue of media freedom , Kavitha criticised the Congress government for arresting journalists, stating that they are neither criminals nor extremists and should have been issued notices instead. At the same time, she questioned the BRS’s alleged double standards , recalling past instances where media organisations were targeted for reporting against certain leaders. She described the silence of political parties over defamatory and abusive reporting against Dalit women as unacceptable and deeply disturbing.

Kavitha also launched a detailed attack on the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) system implemented in Singareni, alleging that it has caused significant financial stress and eroded the public sector company’s operational autonomy. She recalled that Singareni was earlier profitable through open-cast mining , but claimed that its debt burden has increased sharply from around ₹25,000 crore during the BRS regime to nearly ₹50,000 crore under the Congress government forcing the company to borrow even to meet salary obligations .

Citing the growing political and administrative scrutiny, Kavitha referred to the Centre’s recent decision to send a technical team to examine the Naini coal block tender , describing it as an indication that the allegations have reached a serious stage. She urged Union Minister G Kishan Reddy to act decisively in Telangana’s interest and cautioned against what she termed delay tactics through powerless committees .

Demanding immediate corrective measures, Kavitha called for the scrapping of the MDO policy , suspension of suspect tenders , revival of open-cast mining to create local employment, and transparent disclosure of all major contracts. She also questioned why the Centre has failed to allot new coal blocks in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to Singareni, despite repeated demands.

Finally, dismissing speculation about her joining the Congress, Kavitha asserted that Telangana Jagruthi would continue to grow as a strong political alternative , committed to protecting Telangana’s resources, workers’ rights, and public sector institutions .
