Kashmir braces for wet spell, snowfall as Chillai-Kalan begins

Kashmir is set to enter its peak winter phase with the onset of Chillai-Kalan , the 40-day harshest winter period starting December 21, officials said on Saturday. The Valley is likely to witness a spell of wet weather, including moderate to heavy snowfall in higher reaches , while night temperatures slightly improved ahead of the winter peak.

The meteorological department has forecast rain in the plains and snowfall in the mountains from December 20–21 , with higher elevations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Kupwara expected to see moderate to heavy snow, and plains including Srinagar and Pulwama likely to receive light to moderate precipitation. Dense fog over Srinagar and nearby water bodies has reduced visibility, affecting travel. Some key routes and trekking paths, including access points to the Amarnath Yatra , are expected to remain temporarily closed due to worsening conditions.

The dry weather so far this winter has contributed to a rise in ailments such as cough, cold, and sore throat . Night temperatures across the Valley slightly improved, with Pulwama recording -3.2°C , Srinagar -0.4°C , Pahalgam -1°C , Kokernag 0.8°C , Qazigund -1°C , Kupwara -0.7°C , and Gulmarg 2°C .

The wet weather and snowfall are expected to have mixed effects on agriculture and tourism . Snowfall replenishes water sources for irrigation and benefits winter crops and orchards, but heavy snow or rain could damage vegetables, saffron fields, and fruit orchards , while posing risks to livestock. Tourism may benefit in higher reaches as snowfall enhances scenic landscapes and supports winter sports, but dense fog and heavy snow could disrupt travel and trekking activities .

Officials advised residents to take precautions against cold, fog, and winter-related health issues as the Valley enters the peak winter period.
