The makers of Suriya-starrer “Karuppu” have issued an apology to legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja after a controversial dialogue referencing his strict stand on unauthorised use and remixing of songs sparked criticism and concern.

In a statement, the production house Dream Warrior Pictures said there was no intention to offend, hurt or disrespect the veteran composer. The makers acknowledged that the dialogue had led to unintended sentiments and public discomfort , and expressed regret over the same.

The controversy stemmed from a line in the film that made a satirical reference to Ilaiyaraaja’s well-known legal position against remixing and unauthorised use of his compositions . While the makers clarified that the reference was written as part of a broader satirical context , it was perceived by some as a personal remark, triggering backlash.

Following the issue, the production house confirmed that the dialogue will be removed or modified in future versions of the film and all subsequent releases, describing the move as a gesture of respect towards Ilaiyaraaja .

Directed by RJ Balaji, “Karuppu” is a Tamil action drama that released on May 15. The film features Suriya in the lead role as a guardian deity who descends to Earth as a lawyer to fight a corrupt legal system.

The film also stars Trisha Krishnan and has performed strongly at the box office, earning around ₹147 crore worldwide in its opening weekend .

Ilaiyaraaja, who has composed over 8,700 songs across 1,500 films in multiple Indian languages , is widely respected for his contribution to Indian cinema and has been involved in several legal disputes over copyright and unauthorised use of his music , which formed the basis of the reference in the film.
