Karthi’s 'Sardar 2' Gets OTT Release Date, Amazon Prime Video Sets October 1 Premiere

Karthi’s 'Sardar 2' is heading to OTT sooner than expected. Amazon Prime Video has announced that the much-awaited spy thriller will premiere on October 1, 2026, just 21 days after its theatrical release on September 10. The film will stream in multiple languages.

The announcement comes as Karthi fans celebrate the second anniversary of 'Meiyazhagan', released in Telugu as 'Sathyam Sundaram'. However, the spotlight has now shifted to 'Sardar 2', which gets a chance to reach a wider audience after its theatrical run.

Directed by P.S. Mithran, 'Sardar 2' is the sequel to the 2022 hit 'Sardar' and once again features Karthi in a dual role. He plays veteran spy Chandra Bose, aka Sardar, and his son Vijay Prakash, with the story moving between the past and present. The sequel expands the franchise with Vijay taking on a dangerous mission involving the mysterious Black Dagger.

The film also brings an antibiotic-resistance and bio-weapon threat into its espionage story, raising the stakes considerably. SJ Suryah plays the antagonist, while Malavika Mohanan appears as Zara, a RAW agent. Rajisha Vijayan returns from the first film, while Ashika Ranganath and Yogi Babu are also part of the cast.

The September 10 release saw 'Sardar 2' clash with Soori’s 'Mandaadi'. On opening day, 'Mandaadi' recorded a higher India gross, while 'Sardar 2' earned Rs 6.80 crore worldwide, including Rs 1.50 crore overseas. Subsequent box-office tracking showed the Karthi-starrer trailing its competitor domestically.

Despite the mixed theatrical response, Karthi’s dual performance and the film’s action sequences attracted attention. The nearly three-hour runtime and portions of the second half, however, were among the aspects discussed in reviews.

Another notable aspect is the film’s music. 'Sardar 2' marks Sam CS’ 100th film as a composer, making the project a significant milestone in his career. Mithran has also revealed that the sequel’s shoot was wrapped as early as July 2025, more than a year before its theatrical release.

Backed by Prince Pictures and IVY Entertainment, 'Sardar 2' will now make its OTT debut on Amazon Prime Video on October 1. For viewers who missed the theatrical release, the digital premiere offers a chance to revisit Karthi’s latest spy adventure and its father-son storyline.
