Karnataka Unveils Joint Plan with Social Media Platforms to Fight Fake News

In a significant move to strengthen digital governance, the Karnataka government is working on a comprehensive framework to combat misinformation, fake news, and hate speech through closer coordination with leading social media and digital platforms. The initiative aims to safeguard public administration, public safety, and law and order by improving the speed and effectiveness of responses to harmful online content.

Announcing the initiative, Home Minister Priyank Kharge , who also oversees the Information Technology, Biotechnology, and e-Governance portfolios, said the government recently held an extensive consultation with the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and representatives of major digital platforms.

The discussions focused on creating a responsible digital ecosystem where government agencies and technology companies collaborate to identify misleading content quickly and take appropriate action before it causes wider social harm. Officials also explored ways to strengthen existing systems for monitoring online narratives that could threaten social harmony .

A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to appoint Dedicated Points of Contact between the government's proposed Information Disorder Tackling Unit and various social media platforms. A special communication mechanism will also be established to ensure rapid coordination whenever harmful or misleading content is detected.

According to Kharge, the Information Disorder Tackling Unit will function under the joint leadership of the Home Department and the IT-BT Department , enabling faster information sharing and coordinated responses. The new mechanism is expected to improve communication between authorities and digital companies, allowing timely intervention against content that may disrupt peace or spread false information.

The minister reiterated that the state's objective is not only to address misinformation more effectively but also to build a safe, transparent, and accountable digital environment through sustained cooperation with technology companies and other stakeholders.

The proposed framework reflects Karnataka's broader effort to strengthen digital governance while encouraging responsible online engagement in an increasingly interconnected society, where misinformation can spread rapidly and influence public trust, democratic discourse, and emergency response efforts.
