Karnataka recorded its highest-ever 198 organ donations in 2025 , marking a major milestone in the state’s transplant history and securing the third position nationally , officials said on Saturday. The figure surpasses the previous record of 178 donations in 2023.

Among states, Tamil Nadu led with 267 donations , followed by Telangana with 205 . Maharashtra and Gujarat reported 153 and 152 donations respectively, according to official data.

Health experts said the achievement reflects the combined efforts of robust healthcare systems, efficient transplant coordination, and growing public awareness about the importance of organ donation. Strengthened hospital networks and dedicated units under the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) have streamlined donor identification and transplantation processes, ensuring timely and safe organ transfers.

The rise in donations has a direct lifesaving impact , offering patients with kidney, liver, heart, and other organ failures a chance at survival and improved quality of life. Shorter waiting times for transplants mean fewer lives are lost due to organ shortages, while successful transplants restore health and productivity to recipients.

Officials said the record also underscores the broader significance for India’s organ donation landscape , highlighting a shift towards greater societal acceptance, altruism, and participation in donation programmes. It sets a benchmark for other states and demonstrates how effective healthcare coordination and public engagement can transform transplant outcomes nationwide.

“This milestone is not just a number, it represents lives saved, families restored, and the progress of India’s organ donation ecosystem,” a Health Department official said.
